The motto of Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin( Youngstown, Ohio) comes from a Bible verse reminding believers that God has given them "no cowardly spirit."
And he has not been timid during three years as the most prominent religious leader in Rhode Island, the nation's most heavily Catholic state.
Tobin used his edgy humor last year to publicly skewer former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who is Catholic and supports abortion rights. In the diocesan newspaper, during the Republican presidential primary, Tobin addressed the candidate by first name — "Hey Rudy" — and called his stand on abortion pathetic.

ACTION ALERT! Oppose the
"Freedom of Choice Act"
Radical abortion rights groups and their allies in Congress are promoting the extreme pro-abortion agenda of the so-called "Freedom of Choice Act" (FOCA). If they have their way, reasonable, widely supported and constitutionally sound abortion regulations will be knocked down nationwide. Unlimited abortion-on-demand will become our national policy.

Tragically, some lawmakers would reverse these gains and boost the abortion rate by invalidating all such laws, through extreme measures such as the proposed "Freedom of Choice Act" in Congress. Despite its deceptive title, it would deprive the American people in all 50 states of the freedom they now have to enact modest restraints and regulations on the abortion industry, and would coerce all Americans into subsidizing and promoting abortion with their tax dollars. No one supporting such legislation can claim in good faith to be working to reduce abortions.
As the late Pope John Paul II affirmed: "It is impossible to further the common good without acknowledging and defending the right to life, upon which all the other inalienable rights of individuals are founded and from which they develop." (Evangelium Vitae, no. 101) The failure to protect and defend life in its most vulnerable stages renders suspect any claims to the "rightness" of positions in other matters affecting the poorest and least powerful of the human community.

No dispute: Human life begins at conception
On Sunday, August 24, Speaker Nancy Pelosi of the House of Representatives was interviewed on a national news program. During the course of the conversation the host asked Speaker Pelosi "When does life begin?" In response she said "We don't know". Further, referring to herself as a Catholic, she indicated that this issue has been an issue of controversy in the Church, implying it still is such.
