Hello No Heat makes us Sick Oracle Reid!

One of our National leaders acted a if he were an Oracle of Delphi and proclaimed to our Nation and the World that Fossil Fuels are making us "SICK"!   

Senator Reid (D-Nevada) recently told the Fox Business Channel that America needs to stop using fossil fuel. "Coal makes us sick, oil makes us sick. It's global warming. It's ruining our country. It's ruining our world," Reid said.


Well Senator Oracle so does low temperatures and cold weather!.....Ever hear of Upper Respiratory Infections?......Flu Epidemics flourish when there is no heat, Dr. Reed?.....Ever hear about Pneumonia(bacterial and viral)?.....How about Guillian Barre?  Why?...Perhaps our immunity is weakened by cold temperatures, perhaps our body suffers cold stress, we are confined to indoor spaces and breath recirculated air that carries air borne respiratory droplets which arise from people sick with colds.  No one knows for sure but Colds in people increase during the winter per the Common Cold Center at Cardiff University in the United Kingdom and that researches this issue. In general Flu epidemics have also been shown increase during the falls and winters (althoug not always) Dr. Smith-Reid who is Lost in Space developing in his aging brain!

Lawerence Lessig good on Mickey bad on Barack Obama & Jihad

Lawrence Lessig wants to allow copyright laws to keep Disney from owning Mickey Mouse and feels it should revert back to the culture.  He touches on other intellectual properties like Snow White in addition to other Disney staples which are children of Brothers Grim.  He's an advocate of Open Source but he supports Democrats who want to kill Talk Radio with the Fairness Doctrine even though Hugh Hewitt got him to admit he is against it.  Those he supports will kill talk radio so much for Opens Source and Principle, Professor Lessig.  I know the Professor from the great but now defunct Tech TV network and this Video him on a show called Big Thinkers and here is Part II here.  It is very interesting. 
This Obama supporting Professor is smart but misses the forest for the trees....we went to war for the wrong reasons and "it fuels the segment of Islam who will convert" into Jihadists.....They want to kill US regardless, Professor. 
Iraq is but a front on a world wide war as many including the President have said.  The professor is mired in legal minutia that quads him in the trees causing him to miss the Black Forest of Thermonuclear War from Iran or Pakistan o some other Jihadi Regime!  Indeed the Professor of Open Source is typical of the Left which thinks that we were wrong so we should say we sorry and leave Iraq!   We took out Saddam and now must help it like we did for Germany, Japan, Italy and France.   Tradition, Professor is more important than saying sorry and pulling out of Iraq and letting it turn into Afghanistan with Black Gold!  Black Gold that could buy a Pakistan/North Korean Nuke and turn around to use it on us!

    Listen here "No man thinks more highly than I do of the patriotism, as well as abilities, of the very worthy gentlemen who have just addressed the House. But different men often see the same subject in different lights; and, therefore, I hope it will not be thought disrespectful to those gentlemen if, entertaining as I do opinions of a character very opposite to theirs, I shall speak forth my sentiments freely and without reserve. This is no time for ceremony. The questing before the House is one of awful moment to this country. For my own part, I consider it as nothing less than a question of freedom or slavery; and in proportion to the magnitude of the subject ought to be the freedom of the debate. It is only in this way that we can hope to arrive at truth, and fulfill the great responsibility which we hold to God and our country. Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the Majesty of Heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings.

    Mr. President, it is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren till she transforms us into beasts. Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Are we disposed to be of the number of those who, having eyes, see not, and, having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation? For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it.

    I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience. I know of no way of judging of the future but by the past. And judging by the past, I wish to know what there has been in the conduct of the British ministry for the last ten years to justify those hopes with which gentlemen have been pleased to solace themselves and the House. Is it that insidious smile with which our petition has been lately received? Trust it not, sir; it will prove a snare to your feet. Suffer not yourselves to be betrayed with a kiss. Ask yourselves how this gracious reception of our petition comports with those warlike preparations which cover our waters and darken our land. Are fleets and armies necessary to a work of love and reconciliation? Have we shown ourselves so unwilling to be reconciled that force must be called in to win back our love? Let us not deceive ourselves, sir. These are the implements of war and subjugation; the last arguments to which kings resort. I ask gentlemen, sir, what means this martial array, if its purpose be not to force us to submission? Can gentlemen assign any other possible motive for it? Has Great Britain any enemy, in this quarter of the world, to call for all this accumulation of navies and armies? No, sir, she has none. They are meant for us: they can be meant for no other. They are sent over to bind and rivet upon us those chains which the British ministry have been so long forging. And what have we to oppose to them? Shall we try argument? Sir, we have been trying that for the last ten years. Have we anything new to offer upon the subject? Nothing. We have held the subject up in every light of which it is capable; but it has been all in vain. Shall we resort to entreaty and humble supplication? What terms shall we find which have not been already exhausted? Let us not, I beseech you, sir, deceive ourselves. Sir, we have done everything that could be done to avert the storm which is now coming on. We have petitioned; we have remonstrated; we have supplicated; we have prostrated ourselves before the throne, and have implored its interposition to arrest the tyrannical hands of the ministry and Parliament. Our petitions have been slighted; our remonstrances have produced additional violence and insult; our supplications have been disregarded; and we have been spurned, with contempt, from the foot of the throne! In vain, after these things, may we indulge the fond hope of peace and reconciliation. There is no longer any room for hope. If we wish to be free-- if we mean to preserve inviolate those inestimable privileges for which we have been so long contending--if we mean not basely to abandon the noble struggle in which we have been so long engaged, and which we have pledged ourselves never to abandon until the glorious object of our contest shall be obtained--we must fight! I repeat it, sir, we must fight! An appeal to arms and to the God of hosts is all that is left us!

    They tell us, sir, that we are weak; unable to cope with so formidable an adversary. But when shall we be stronger? Will it be the next week, or the next year? Will it be when we are totally disarmed, and when a British guard shall be stationed in every house? Shall we gather strength by irresolution and inaction? Shall we acquire the means of effectual resistance by lying supinely on our backs and hugging the delusive phantom of hope, until our enemies shall have bound us hand and foot? Sir, we are not weak if we make a proper use of those means which the God of nature hath placed in our power. The millions of people, armed in the holy cause of liberty, and in such a country as that which we possess, are invincible by any force which our enemy can send against us. Besides, sir, we shall not fight our battles alone. There is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations, and who will raise up friends to fight our battles for us. The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone; it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave. Besides, sir, we have no election. If we were base enough to desire it, it is now too late to retire from the contest. There is no retreat but in submission and slavery! Our chains are forged! Their clanking may be heard on the plains of Boston! The war is inevitable ­ and let it come! I repeat it, sir, let it come.

    It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry, Peace, Peace ­ but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God!

The Declaration of Independence which expresses the Desire, Will and Hopes of the American Colonists
is divided into five sections: the introduction, the preamble, the indictment of George III, the denunciation of the British people, and the conclusion. Below I focus and outline the Preamble and the Indictments below. 
 
Preamble
The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America
When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
There were 28 Indictments of King George IIIKing George III, the British king who was ruling over the 13 colonies when they declared independence.  The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.
1.He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
2. He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
3. He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
4.He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
5. He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
6. He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected, whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
7. He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
8. He has obstructed the Administration of Justice by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary Powers.
9. He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
10. He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.
11. He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
12. He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil Power.
13. He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

21. For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
22. For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.
23. He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
24. He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
25. He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation, and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & Perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.
26. He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
27. He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.
28. In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people

Uribe & Bush, Bulldog Churchill would be PROUD!

Columbia's Victory yesterday against Terrorism by the liberation of Columbian Military Hostages, Senator Betancourt and U.S. military contractors  Marc Gonsalves, Thomas Howes and Keith Stansell (who had been held by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia since their drug-surveillance plane went down in the jungle in February 2003),  has been made possible by President Dubya Bush's persistent support, confidence and determination to fight terrorism in the world!  In 2002 when Alvaro Uribe became President of Columbia, the Farc, after 40 years of existance numbered 20,000 and it seemed as if the country of Columbia would dissolve into a Wild Wild Land of Mafia like drug lords and a failed state.  In fact Senator Ingrid Bentancourt was running against Uribe in the election he won when she was kidnapped by the FARC in 2002.   Florida was flooded by Columbia ex-pats because of their desparation and fear of the Farc and its downward spiral into chaos. 
 
President Dubya Bush took a chance on the lone voice of a courageous man, Alvaro Uribe(a Jesuit and Benedictine  prep school alumnus, graduating in 1970 from the Jorge Robledo Institute, where his academic performance exempted him from all final exams during the last two years of school) and expanded his support of Plan Colombia(wikipedia). 

In 2001, the administration of U.S. President George W. Bush expanded the program with the appropriation of $676 million for the Andean Counterdrug Initiative. Of this appropriation, approximately $380 million was targeted at Colombia. The rest went towards other South American countries covered by the Andean Counterdrug Initiative. The 2001 initiative reduced the limitations on the numbers and the activities of civilian contractors, allowing them to carry and use military weapons which, according to the U.S. government, would be necessary to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment during spray missions. The United States Congress rejected amendments to the Andean initiative that would have redirected some of the money to demand reduction programs in the United States, primarily through funding of drug treatment services. Some critics have opposed the rejection of these modifications, claiming that the drug problem and its multiple repercussions would be structurally addressed by curbing the demand, and not the production, of illicit drugs, since drug crops can always be regrown and transplanted elsewhere, inside or outside Colombia and its neighboring countries, as long as there is a commercially viable market.

In 2004, the United States appropriated approximately $727 million for the Andean Counterdrug Initiative, $463 million of which was targeted at Colombia.

In October 2004, the compromise version of two U.S. House-Senate bills was approved, increasing the number of U.S. military advisors that operate in the country as part of Plan Colombia to 800 (from 400) and that of private contractors to 600 (from 400).[35]

In a November 22, 2004 visit to Cartagena, President Bush stood by Colombian president Uribe's security policies and declared his support for continuing to provide Plan Colombia aid in the future. Bush claimed the initiative enjoys "wide bipartisan support" in the US and in the coming year he would ask Congress to renew its support

Of Course Democrats like Senator Pat Leahy were against it per Global Security:
The pipeline-defense plan drew criticism from Senate Democrat Patrick Leahy, who said the proposal drew the United States further into what he termed a "military quagmire" in Colombia, and said Congress should be very reluctant to lend support. The US money would go to train two brigades of Colombian troops to protect the pipeline and eventually other parts of the country's infrastructure including power lines frequently targeted by guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.
There are less than 10,000 Farc Rebels because of American training, money and little by little the Columbian Government and Military countered punched after they were on the ropes.  I am Hispanic and I had written off Columbia but I was wrong and Dubya + Uribe were courageous and never gave up.  I thought Bentancourt would never see Liberty again.  This is a Victory against Asymmetrical Warfare and Evil!  We should Never Never give up with the Iraqi, Afghanis or any other culture or country even if infected with an Evil Jihadi culture!    Go Bush and Americans who are willing to fight for the future of the World and mostly because of our Children.    Like Churchill said "Never Never Never give Up"!

An Awful Truth about Wesley Clark & WW III!

Wesley Clark slams Senator McCain over his "Judgment" as a reason to vote for Senator "never run a Cool-aide Stand" BH Obama.  This a case of the pot calling the kettle black.  A NATO General from Britain refused to follow an order from NATO Commander Wesley Clark according toThe Guardian:

No sooner are we told by Britain's top generals that the Russians played a crucial role in ending the west's war against Yugoslavia than we learn that if Nato's supreme commander, the American General Wesley Clark, had had his way, British paratroopers would have stormed Pristina airport threatening to unleash the most frightening crisis with Moscow since the end of the cold war.

"I'm not going to start the third world war for you," General Sir Mike Jackson, commander of the international K-For peacekeeping force, is reported to have told Gen Clark when he refused to accept an order to send assault troops to prevent Russian troops from taking over the airfield of Kosovo's provincial capital.

When at a forum in September, retired Gen. Hugh Shelton was asked if he would support retired Gen. Wesley Clark for president, Shelton, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, quickly took a drink of water. "That question makes me wish it were vodka," Shelton said. "I've known Wes for a long time. I will tell you the reason he came out of Europe early had to do with integrity and character issues, things that are very near and dear to my heart. I'm not going to say whether I'm a Republican or a Democrat. I'll just say Wes won't get my vote."
General Norman Schwarzkof on Weasel Clark :
on November 6, retired Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf appeared on CNBC's Capital Report, hosted by Gloria Borger and Alan Murray, who asked him what he thought of Clark. "I think the greatest condemnation against him . . . came from the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff when he was a NATO commander. I mean, he was fired as a NATO commander," Schwarzkopf replied, "and when Hugh Shelton said he was fired because of matters of character and integrity, that is a very, very damning statement, which says, `If that's the case, he's not the right man for president,' as far as I'm concerned."
Clark is highly decorated lack luster General who got canned because he was incompetent and had poor Judgment.  It is understandable why Clark has been dubbed "Weasel" especially in light of the above and his slamming of Senator McCain, an authentic Hero who although not my first choice as the GOP Nomination is more than qualified to be President of the USA.  However McCain has not been truly "swift-boated" by Weasel Clark...Swift-boating means telling the truth about someone and as a result getting knocked down to size as happened to John Kerry  by the Swift Boat Veterans.  John McCain has been John Kerry-ed by Weasel Clark just like the Vietnam Vets got John Kerry-ed by his lies.

Brig. Gen. Thomas W. Hartmann, legal adviser to the U.S. military tribunal system, said charges are being sworn against Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, a Saudi of Yemeni descent, who has been held at the military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, since 2006......

Al-Nashiri told a hearing at Guantanamo Bay last year that he confessed to helping plot the Cole bombing only because he was tortured by U.S. interrogators.

$7 Gas & Jihad on USA Mass Transit!

Think about it, for  no one has brought up this point to Speaker Nancy Pe-lousy..... Oil exploartion is a National Security issue!  Liberals want us to use Mass Transit.  Spain's and England's Subways were bombed because these two countries use mass transit....$7.00 a gallon gas as predicted here is a prescription for Democrats to get their mass transit subways and rail (which they will not use but make it law for us plebes too)! This is a recipe for London Tube and Madrid Metro re-enactments in America.....let Americans drill in our country for OIL now!
The soultion is easy as Chi-Coms(India & others ) plus Fidel Castro are going to drill in the Forida Straits thanks to 
Jimmy Carter whose administration split the straits with Cuba in 1977!

Cuba has divided its side of the Florida Straits into 59 lease areas. As of the end of February, foreign countries had secured the rights or were negotiating the rights to 16 of them, according to Cuban government documents provided by the Cuban Interests Section in Washington.

Kirby Jones, founder and president of the U.S. Cuba Trade Association, a group that promotes United States business interests in Cuba, said Cuba had signed agreements with companies from China, India, Spain and Canada.

"I have always been and probably will always be in some way shape or form a working mom," she said to laughter from the crowd on Friday.

"I used to get up in the morning and go to an office. Now I get up and go to a plane," she stated. "My kids still don't care where I am. They just know both parents work in their household, and as long as we're back for bedtime, they could care less."

"I'm lucky because we have the resources and support network--including the best my mother who babysits the grandchildren--to make sure my kids are taken care of. But many families don't, which is why the country needs pay equity, extended family leave, and health care for all Americans."
"We can work together to make a more mom- and family-friendly nation, and that's why the partnership is so important," Michelle Obama said in praising the organization.

"It's time for the leaders of this country to fight for the causes of working families every single day, whether it's extending family and medical leave, pay equity or pushing to make sure that finally, finally, we have a nation where basic health care is not a privilege but is a fundamental right," she stated.

This was true to his lifestyle as archbishop for he never chose to live in luxury and always implored his priests to beware of materialism as an obstacle to the gospel witness.

Cardinal Maurice Michael Otunga died on September 6, 2003, at the age of eighty, after serving the church for fifty-three years as a priest, a bishop, and a cardinal. Kenyans remember him as a great minister and a devoted pastor in the history of their land. Along with his counterpart of the Anglican Church, Archbishop Festo Olang,' Cardinal Maurice Michael Otunga is remembered in Kenyan history as a great apostle and a father of African Christianity.

Obama & his Pals Surreal including Odinga!

I know the Kenyan Heritage issue is a peripheral issue regarding Obama but in addition to his Radical Left Marxist like agenda to redistribute wealth and his support of Liberal Eco-Environmentalism his Kenyan connections are Surreal.    It is just the weird factor in addition to the other issues you are pounding the airwaves and blogosphere with.  The PM of Kenya was educated in East Germany on a scholarship and named his son Fidel after Castro.  Obama visited Odinga in 2006 and supported him.  He also called him back in January '08 regarding the post election violence.  Now even as I'm writing, this Odinga character is in DC calling the kettle black regarding Zimbabwe when he done the same thing in his country on a smaller scale.  Additionally he promised to support/mandate the Sharia Law agenda in Kenya.  It is all so strange and Obama has done with all his American misfits he has thrown Odinga under the bus too and will not visit with him now that Odinga is in the USA.  I think this warrants thought because it is all so strange including Obama's wife, Church, friends, Preachers, allys and entire life.  George Washington he is not nor is he George Washinton Carver....He is Barack Whose-Insane Obama....

Russ Jr's 1st Sunday with GOd is Father's Day!

Tim Russert was an Olympianian of Life and Champion Gold Medalist of Fatherhood.  It is obvious that the meaning of Life for Tim Russert centered around Fatherhood.  There is Big Russ and Russert was Little Russ!  Russ Jr was Big because he loved his Father and still listened and learned from him even though he was a Moderator of Presidents, Senators, Celebrities and World Leaders. Statemans from all walks of life were his subjects on Meet the Press and like a bullfighter in the ring he gracefully piloted  them with his elegant questioning.

Little Russ was a wonderful Father to his son Luke and a surrogate father to the Boys and Girls Club of America.  Tim Russert Jr., because you loved your Dad, Big Russ, a hard working trunk driver and garbage man and followed his pearls of wisdom you became a Man and a Great Father.   We will miss that Leprechaun Luck of the Irish American What a Country kind of optimism you embodied....that joie de vie.....exuberance of life......joy of living and of Politics....I and millions of Americans will miss you on Sunday Mornings because even though it is Sundays it is no longer Meet the Press because you are not on TV anymore.

Tim Russert was a board member of the Greater Washington Boys and Girls Club of America's Promise Alliance for Youth and gave this organization 100's of thousands of dollars from the proceeds he made for his loving tribute written to his Father, Big Russ and Me.  Tim was such a great Father to not only his son Luke but to all these adopted boys and girls that in 1995, the National Father's Day Committee named Russert "Father of the Year," and Parents magazine honored him as "Dream Dad" in 1998. In 2001 the National Fatherhood Initiative gave him another "Father of the Year" nod.
 
Our Father in Heaven brought you into the Joy of his Love on the Good Friday to Father's Day because it was his will and our Lives belong to him....Well Done Good and Faithful Servant, like St. Paul in (2 Tim. 4:7-8):

I have hit the jackpot researching Tim Russert the last 2 days.  I can't help it but his stature and skill as a thinker and interviewer are so formidable and a je ne sais quoi but I am drawn into learning more about this man's life.  It was his God graced intellect, sharpened by the formidable Jesuits and molded by his no nonsense faithful and hard working Irish Catholic parents.  In the process of swimming the net I have found a gem of a tiny little website from Western New York that has some articles of Tim Russert written 9 years ago that is worth looking at:

Tim Russert RIP, Thanks for the Boys and Girls Club Work

Tim Russert was a GOOD MAN as his book honoring his father is a testament to.  He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Washington Boys and Girls Club and America’s Promise –Alliance for Youth. Russert's work for the Boys and Girls Club of America further points to his fine human qualities and are moving and telling as outlined below!   Russert, a man who like the super athletes he so enjoyed on the gridiron and baseball diamond was as superb as the athletes he admired at interviewing world leaders, politicos, celebrities and delving into the issues of the day. On Meet the Press, Russert's probing inquiry and commanding interviewing technique reminded me of an automated Medieval Gauntlet whose swinging blades and axes were replaced by questions and comments that could maime and amputate the careers of Politicians more than the fabled instrument of a bygone era.  The best New Media Talk Show Hosts on Mondays would almost always highlight Russert's verbal wrestling matches spiced with intellectual full nelsons and reverses.  Russert's tough but repsectful grilling of his guests was always interesting and educational and worthy of commentary.             

"Plotting his interviews out like chess matches, he deploys aggressive openings, subtle feints, artfully constructed traps, and lightning offenses to crack the politicians' phony veneer and reveal the genuine veneer beneath," wrote Jack Shafer for Slate.

The kids of the Boys & Girls Clubs knew they'd be winners no matter who won the presidential election. That's because Tim Russert, moderator of NBC's Meet the Press, got Washington's most partisan spouses, Republican Mary Matalin and Democrat James Carville, to bet $1,000 on the outcome. The loser had to write a check to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington.

Last year Russert encouraged Senators George Allen and Jon Corzine to make a similar bet on the air. Before that, Russert challenged the chairs of the national parties. Each bet was another win for the kids of the DC area.

Russert got involved with the clubs nine years ago, when they asked him to emcee their annual congressional dinner. But he had known about their work for years.

"My father was in a boys' club in the 1930s in south Buffalo," he says. "It's an organization where you can see firsthand results. You know you've changed someone's life."

Russert has emceed nine annual dinners and announced that he'll give $100,000 from the sales of his book Big Russ & Me to the clubs. When he won $20,000 on Jeopardy!, that check also went to the clubs.

"Last year we reached our $1-million fundraising goal and we absorbed the Metropolitan Police Boys & Girls Clubs," Russert says. "The best part is when the kids come back from college and talk about what they did. They want to come home and sponsor a kid."

"Tim brings tears to our eyes when he speaks so lovingly about his father or so painfully of the plight of our children," says Pat Shannon, president of the clubs. "He makes us laugh at his Yogi Berra stories, and he lifts us up with his donations. It doesn't get any better than Tim Russert."
